Guide tO Setting Up and Using SDE MIPS Lite
 
 This guide explains how to setup and use MIPS Technologies SDE (Software 
 Development Environment) Lite version 6.0 under Linux. 
 
 Step 1. Set up the environment to run SDE Lite. The period at the start of the 
 command below tells the shell to "source" the script; i.e., to read and 
 execute the commands in the *current* shell environment.  
 
    $ . /usr/local/sde6/bin/sdeenv.sh   # this is a period followed by a space
 
 Step 2. Create a directory structure and copy files into it. You may want your 
 sde directory to be under the directory for cs224 but it can be anywhere.
 
    $ mkdir sde
    $ chmod og-rx sde
    $ cd sde
    $ sdemklocal
    $ ln -s sde-6.06.01/examples/make.mk
 
 When you are finished your directory structure will look like this (you will 
 create the your-dirs directories later):

 Each time you log into sleipnir you will need to run this script again: 
 
    $ . /usr/local/sde6/bin/sdeenv.sh  
  
 Alternatively, add the above command (without the dot) to your .bash_profile 
 file in your root directory so that the script is automatically executed when 
 you log in (the entire command including the dot). Any assembly code you write
 for sde must exist in a subdirectory under the sde directory. Code in another 
 location will not assemble properly.
 
 Now you are ready to test SDE with "Hello World" in MIPS assembly. 


 FIRST. Make a directory under sde called hello. Copy these files into hello.
 
    $ mkdir hello
    $ cd hello 
    $ cp /home/fac/donna/public_html/cs224/examples/sde/hello/hello.s .
    $ cp /home/fac/donna/public_html/cs224/examples/sde/hello/Makefile .
  
 Alternatively, you can also paste the Makefile and hello.s files from 
 
    http://www.cs.csub.edu/~donna/cs224/examples/sde/hello/
 
 to like-named files in your hello directory. Just note that when pasting in vi 
 on sleipnir, first turn off indenting from within vi: 
 
    :set paste
 
 When you are done pasting, you can turn indenting back on for coding using:
 
    :set nopaste
 
 Once you have copied Makefile and hello.s, compile and run the assembly with 
 the following two commands:
 
    $ sde-make
    $ sde-run helloram
 
 If sde-make fails, check that your directory structure is set up correctly. If 
 hello is not a subdirectory of under sde, then sde-make will fail.
